Skilled-Regional (Residence) Visa (Subclass 887)

The provisional Skilled Regional visa (Subclass 489) allows suitably skilled migrants to live and work in a specified regional area of Australia for up to four (4) years. It is a sponsored visa and requires the applicant to be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government or be sponsored by an eligible relative who resides in a designated regional area of Australia. This visa is points-tested and requires the applicant be invited to apply for the visa through the SkillSelect programme.

Under this visa category you are allowed to stay in Australia for 5 years from the date you are granted the visa. You can live, work and study in a designated region of Australia. You are permitted to travel to and from Australia as many times as you want. While the visa is valid you can apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (Subclass 191) commencing from 16 November 2022.

What this visa lets you do

The Skilled Regional visa (Subclass 489) is a Provisional Residency visa . Once granted, it allows the holder (and any family members included in the application) to:

  • stay in a regional area of Australia for up to four (4) years
  • work and study in a regional area of Australia
  • travel to and from Australia during the validity of the visa

To apply for this visa, you must:

  • be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
  • have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • Receive an invitation to apply
  • have enough points to be eligible to apply
